Q: What is Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library?
A: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a program that sends a book each month to the home of each registered child (birth through five years of age) at no cost to the family. Children of different ages receive different titles; the books are carefully selected and are the children’s to keep. Parents report that their children love these books and look forward to their arrival in the mail.
Q: Does my child qualify for this program?
A: If you reside in zip codes 48501-07 or 48532 and your child is younger than age 5, you may sign your child up for the program. You may sign up all of your children meeting these requirements and each will receive an age-appropriate book monthly. (Note that your child will receive the last book in the month of his or her 5th birthday.)
Q: Are the books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library entirely free or are there “hidden” costs and fees that parents must pay to participate?
A: The books are provided free to all registered children from birth to age five living in zip codes 48501-07 and 48532. There are no strings attached and parents are not required to pay for the books received or pay any costs to participate in the program.
Q: How do participating children get the books? Are parents required to pick them up?
A: Each month, a new age-appropriate book is mailed to the child at the home address provided on the registration form. Books with incorrect addresses are not forwarded by the post office. Most undelivered books may be available for pickup at Flint Public Library in the following month.
Q: How soon will the first book be shipped?
A: The first book should be received 8-10 weeks after the registration form is processed. If not, please contact the Flint Public Library at 810-232-7111 ext 2137 or email@example.com.
Q: How are the books selected?
A: The books are new, age-appropriate books selected by a team of early childhood education experts appointed by the Dollywood Foundation. Each June, the committee sorts through a world of possibilities to select a quality, diverse and universal collection of titles. There are 60 books in all if the child is registered at birth.
Q: Is there a family income requirement for participation?
A: No. Books are provided to registered children from birth to age five regardless of parents’ income. Encouraging reading early in life for all children is the principal goal of our community and all the members of the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network.
Q: If I move out of the eligible zip codes, can my child still participate?
A: Should you move outside zip codes 48501-07 or 48532, your child automatically exits the program. However, parents/legal guardians may go to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library website to see if the Imagination Library is available in your new community.
Q: How can I get more books for my child?
A: Visit the Flint Public Library! You and each of your children can have a library card and check out some of our 30,000 books for early readers, as well as Launchpads (tablets with learning apps), BookPacks (books plus a digital audiobook), DVDs and more!
Children’s materials check out for three weeks with a three-week renewal and children’s cards do not have overdue fines. So it’s easy to come to the library every few weeks and stock up on fun materials for reading and learning!
Saturday is family day at FPL, so there are special story times and activities almost every single Saturday. Every Child Ready to Read story times like Bookie Babies and Tell-a-Tail happen during the week, both days and evenings. Check our calendar for these great opportunities.
Q: Who pays for this program?
A: The program for Flint kids is supported by both the Child Health and Development Fund and the Flint Kids Read Fund of the Foundation for Flint, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. The Flint Kids Read Fund also accepts donations from the community to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Flint. Donate!
