As a community, we want all children to enter kindergarten healthy and ready to read. We can now offer a great opportunity for Flint parents to get free books for their children!
Parents of children residing in zip codes 48501-07 and 48532 can sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that sends a book each month to the home of each registered child (birth through five years of age) at no cost to the family. Children of different ages receive different titles; the books are carefully selected and are the children’s to keep. Parents report that their children love these books and look forward to their arrival in the mail.
Please browse through our website. If you are a parent of a preschooler living in zip codes 48501-07 and 48532 who is not registered for the Imagination Library, you are invited to enroll your child. If there is more than one preschooler in your family, each child can be registered separately and will receive his/her own book.
Links on the sidebar menu lead to information about enrolling your child, frequently asked questions, contacting the Library, and donating to support this great program.
This program is made possible through financial support from both the Child Health and Development Fund and the Flint Kids Read Fund of the Foundation for Flint, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. See our Donate page if you would like to help!
Under the name Flint Kids Read, early childhood service providers in the education, library, university and medical communities are collaborating as members of the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network on a comprehensive approach to address the needs of Flint children with an emphasis on ensuring that every child in Flint will enter kindergarten healthy and ready to read.
The purpose of Flint Kids Read is to provide children and childcare providers, teachers home visitors and parents access to age appropriate reading materials (Books!) to establish a strong educational foundation for early life. Each child or adult with influence on the literary journey for a child in Flint will receive an age appropriate book by mail each month for age 0-5 or for the ages of the children they care for.
Childcare providers who wish to be included in the book program should contact Flint Public Library by email at firstname.lastname@example.org to apply as a Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Caregiver Site.
