A collaboration with Sloan Museum and the St. John Street Historical Committee.
Flint's St. John Neighborhood was a thriving multi-racial community until it was demolished in the early 1970s. The policies that gave precedence to industry and I-475 resulted in displacing many Black residents who lived in the neighborhood. A panel of former residents and leaders will discuss the impact and the subsequent struggle for housing experienced by so many in the community.
After a discussion, attendees will be invited to view the paintings of Flint artist, Bill Orling, on display in the Library's Lower Level. Orling received the Heritage Award from the Genesee County Historical Society in 1978 for his ability to artistically capture the beauty and diversity of Flint's neighborhoods.
