The Kommareddis immigrated to Flint from India in the 1970s, and immediately found it to be a welcoming community. One of the places that they felt that immediate welcome was at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. It served so many purposes for their growing family. If Dr. Kommareddi had a lull in his patient load, he could pop over to the Library to read a few magazines or relax before the next challenging case. From the time their two daughters were born, the Library was a frequent stop for story time and picking out books. The entire family loved books and reading.
Their visits slowed with the passage of time and the advent of downloadable books, but the love of the Library remained. When the Kommareddis visited the Library after the re-opening, they were blown away. They immediately recognized the allure of the beautiful, light-filled space and the impact it would have on the community. Jayashree, in particular, appreciated the important role that the abundant meeting rooms would have on local organizations and groups.
Both Prasad and Jayashree acknowledge the benefits they have received from living in the Flint community. They made a gift in order to give back and pay forward, so that future generations will have the same incredible resources and opportunities their family experienced. They chose to name a meeting room to honor the Library’s role as a community hub. They believe that the freely available space will make it easier for organizations and their leadership to engage in important work.
